Text:     Linear Algebra and its Applications 2nd Edition (updated) by David C. Lay, Addison-Wesley, 2000.

Office Hours:    Mon/Th            1:25-2:25PM   math lab, 130/132 Science Building*

Tu                    4:00-5:00PM   math lab, 130/132 Science Building*

Other times by arrangement

* If the math lab is crowded; that is, if I can't find a place to sit, I will hold office hours in my office, CU-Denver Building, Room 622.  If this becomes the case, I will announce the move.

We will cover the following sections:

            1.1-1.8, 2.1-2.5, 4.1-4.7, 5.1-5.3, 6.1-6.5, 6.7 and 7.1.

Note: If we finish these sections, we will cover 5.4, 5.5 and 7.4 as time permits.  We will not be skipping determinants, but instead do a quick coverage in section 5.2.  This material represents the basic core topics and those most important in applications.  In order to cover it all, we will have to average a little better than one section per class.  There are several nice sections on a variety of applications (1.9, 2.7, 2.8, 4.8, 4.9, 5.6, 5.7, 6.6, 6.8, and 7.5). These are assigned as optional reading assignments, but will not be covered in class or on exams.  However, there will be a project report (between 5-10 pages) on one of these applications or some other application of your choice.  This paper is to be turned in at the latest by May 4th at 5:00PM, but you can turn it in whenever you want before that.

The lectures, material in the book, exams and quizzes will contain a mixture of theory and computations.  The beauty of this subject is the way that the theoretical and the computational components interact.

Students are encouraged to work together in cooperative groups on the take-home quizzes and the project.  Each person must turn in quizzes and project report.

The quiz and exam due dates are as follows.  Quizzes will be assigned on Wednesdays and be due on the following Monday though it can always be turned in on the Wednesday without contacting me.  However, if you can’t get the quiz in by Wednesday, please contact me beforehand via any means with an appropriate excuse.  Unless otherwise noted, all problems on quizzes are worth the same number of points.  That is, if there are 3 problems, then each problem is worth 20/3 points. Show all work on exams, quizzes and the project sufficient for me to understand how your solutions were obtained.  Exam dates are firm, and if you have a problem, please contact me beforehand.
