Course Syllabus - Spring 2001

From the College Catalog : An introduction to discrete structures and their applications. Major emphasis is on applications of graph theory to computer science, engineering, operations research, social science, and biology. Topics include connectivity, coloring, trees, Euler and Hamiltonian paths and circuits, matching and covering problems, shortest route, and network flows. Prerequisites: Math 3000, Intro. to Abstract Math, or Math/CS 3614 Discrete Math II

Exams: There will be two (2) hourly in-class exams (see schedule below) and a comprehensive final.

Homework: There will be two types of homework assignments. The first type consists of exercises from the text. These will generally not be collected, but will be discussed in class. This homework will be assigned weekly. These assignments are considered the minimum that should be done.

The second type of homework will consist of special assignments handed out in class. These will be collected and graded.

Quizzes: Every week, on Wednesday, a short in-class quiz will be given on the homework material. These quizzes will cover definitions, short answers, computations and simple proof techniques. If for some reason you are unable to take a quiz in class, you may take the quiz on the web (up until the next class period). From time to time I may require that everyone take the quiz on the web.

Grades: The final grade will be determined as follows:

The 2 hourly exams - 40%
Graded Homework - 20%
Quizzes - 10%
Final Exam - 30%

There's no curving of exam grades : A(100-90) B(89-80) C(79-70) D(69-60) F(<60)

Plusses and minuses may be used in final grades at my discretion.

Syllabus: We shall cover chapters 1 - 6 and 10 - 12 of the book. This means that we will attempt to cover approximately three sections per week.
