Some References for Abstract Math
The following list of texts may be of help as they cover the same material as our text with a slightly different viewpoint. You can borrow any of these from me. The newer books on this list have publication dates.
- Ash, A Primer of Abstract Mathematics, MAA
-
- Avelsgaard, Foundations for Advanced Mathematics (Out of Print)
- This text has been used in the past for this course.
- Barnier and Feldman, Introduction to Advanced Mathematics, (2nd Ed.), Prentice Hall,
2000
-
- Bond, Introduction to Abstract Mathematics, Brooks/Cole
-
- Cupillari, The Nuts and Bolts of Proofs, Wadsworth
- A small paperback with no frills.
- D'Angelo and West, Mathematical Thinking: Problem Solving and Proofs, (2nd Ed.),
Prentice Hall, 2000
- Lots of nice exercises ... was a contender for our text.
- Devlin, Sets, Functions, and Logic: An Introduction to Abstract Mathematics (3rd Ed.), Chapman & Hall/ CRC Press, 2004
- I really like this book. It is well written and a serious possible replacement for our text.
- Iglewicz and Stoyle, An Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, MacMillan
-
- Fletcher and Patty, Foundations of Higher Mathematics, PWS-Kent
- This text has also been used in the past for this course.
- Gilbert and Vanstone, An Introduction to Mathematical Thinking, Pearson Prentice-Hall, 2005 (New Book)
- Lay, Analysis with an introduction to Proof, (3rd Ed.), Prentice Hall, 2001
-
- Maddox, Mathematical Thinking and Writing, Harcourt/Academic Press, 2002
-
- Morash, Bridge to Abstract Mathematics, Random House
-
- O'Leary, The Structure of Proof: With Logic and Set Theory, Prentice-Hall, 2003
-
- Schumacher, Chapter Zero: Fundamental Notions of Abstract Mathematics, Addison-Wesley,
1996.
-
- Smith, Eggen, St. Andre, A Transition to Advanced Mathematics, (6th Ed.), Thomson
(Brooks/Cole), 2006
- Former text used in this course. You'd think they'd be able to get it right
after the third edition ... but I guess not.
- Sundstrom, Mathematical Reasoning: Writing and
Proof, Prentice-Hall 2003
-
- Wolf, Proof, Logic and Conjecture: A Mathematician's Toolbox, Freeman, 1998
- I like this book since it seriously deals with logic. Check out the blurb on the back cover.
