Math 4/5027 - Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos
Problem Set #2 - Spring 1998

Please do not postpone the assignment until the last minute! All assignments will require reading, contemplation, and then adequate time for working problems. Remember you also need to identify a Challenge problem (one for undergraduates and two for graduate students) to work before the end of the semester. * marks problems for graduate students (extra credit for undergraduates).

  1. Reading. We will work through most of Chapter 2 in class, so you will want to read all of the chapter (at least once) as we go. Section 2.6 is important, but optional for undergraduates; it is required for graduate students. Everyone should read section 2.7 which contains some good linear algebra.
  2. Fixed points of Henon map. Problem T2.2.
  3. *Period-two points of Henon map. * Problem T2.5.
  4. *Stability in the Henon map. * Problem T2.7.
  5. Analysis of linear systems. Problem 2.1a and 2.1c.
  6. Analysis of a nonlinear systems. Problem 2.3.
  7. Image of unit disk. Problem 2.8.

Just For Fun:

An Old Chestnut: A ship is twice as old as a ship's boiler was when the ship was as old as the boiler is. What is the ratio of the boiler's age to the ship's age?
