  Course Overview

  This course will provide the traditional material on methods for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with a heavy emphasis on applications of ODEs. As we learn the mathematics of ODEs, we will also study the ways in which they arise in mechanics, electronics, population and epidemic models, physiology and medicine. This couse is designed to be useful and fun, with something for everyone. Here's what I really feel: ODEs is the best subject in mathematics!
  
  Advice: There is no way to learn about ODEs without plenty of practice. You must work assigned problems regularly with great devotion. It would be wise to attend all class meetings since there will be material presented in class (particularly applications and modeling problems) that may not appear in the book. The text is good and it is always advisable to keep up with the reading assignments.
  
  Projects and exams: The final grade will have several components in order to give everyone a chance to establish a strong record. There will be three in-class exams (one page of notes allowed) during the semester on February 12, March 12, and April 16. There will also be a cumulative in-class during final exam in May. In addition, everyone will be required to hand in three projects which will be open-ended modeling/applications problems. There will be a list of several projects from which you can choose. Collaboration is allowed on projects, but everyone must ultimately turn in his/her own write-up of the project. (Copying is ridiculously easy to detect on projects!) All projects are due by April 23 (no exceptions), so that they do not interfere with your preparation for the final exam. However, you are strongly advised to get started on projects as soon as possible and to turn them in regularly throughout the semester. Projects must be high quality documents, neatly hand-written or done on a word processor, with complete detailed solutions.
  
  Grading policy: The final grade will be determined as follows:
  • 3 exams and 3 projects -- 13%
  • Final exam -- 22%.
