1. Please get an early start on these problems! Do not put them off to the last minute. Ask for help before the assignment is due. I have office hours before and after class in Science 130. I can also set up special meeting times on Wednesdays. I can also be reached by email.

2. We will start a brand new topic this week. It's probability, a subject that has many interesting and immediate applications. We will cover most of Chapter 8, so please start reading it carefully.

3. Please do the following problems from the text. There are a lot of problems, but most of them are short. You must show all of your work!

· Unit 8A: 8, 10b, 14d, 16d, 18abcd, 28.


· Unit 8B: 6, 12a, 14a.

You overhear the following conversation:

Matt: I have three dogs and the product of their ages is 36.
Ben: That doesn't tell me the dog's ages.
Matt: The sum of their ages is equal to today's date.
Ben: I still don't know their ages.
Matt: Oh yes, the oldest dog has short hair.
Ben: OK! Now I know their ages.
