Due February 11, 1999
1. We will finish up the part of the course devoted
to logic and critical thinking this week. Please finish reading all four
units of Chapter 1. One of the central ideas of this chapter is the analysis
of deductive arguments and the distinction between valid/invalid arguments
and sound/unsound arguments. If you have trouble with these ideas, please
ask in class or see me in office hours.
2. Please do the following problems from the book. Remember that the problems
listed below are a minimum recommended dose. You should do more if you need
more practice!
Unit 1C: 1, 4, 8, 21, 23, 38.
Unit 1D: 1, 13, 15, 17
Just For Fun
A jailer has three white hats, two red hats, and three prisoners, one of
whom is blind. Each prisoner is given a hat and told he will be freed if
he can deduce the color of his hat. Prisoners 1 and 2 cannot determine the
color of their hats. Having heard the responses of the other two prisoners,
the blind Prisoner 3 correctly determines the color of his hat and is freed.
How did he do it and what color is his hat?
