Do not wait until the last minute to start the assignment! It’s best to get an early start and work on it in several steps. Do not hesitate to ask for help before the assignment is due! 1. Please read Units 5A, 5B, and 5C of the text.

2. Please give a (no less than) two-page answer to one of the following questions; they are open-ended, so there is no single correct answer. You must locate relevant sources of data and quantitative information, and cite all sources that you use. Use the data that you collect to support your conclusion. State all assumptions that you make. Your argument must be well written and carefully formulated. Include tables and graphs that support your claim.

A. Will cancer eventually overtake heart disease as the leading fatal disease in this country?

B. Suppose you plan to travel from Denver to Washington D.C. Is it safer to drive or to fly?

C. Do the richest baseball teams do the best?

D. The problem of hunger in America is getting worse.

 

Just for Fun:

Two volumes of Shakespeare are on a shelf in the normal sequence. Each volume is three inches thick with eighth-inch covers. A bookworm decides to eat his way from the first page of the first volume to the last page of the second volume. What distance through the books must the worm travel?
