Math 2000 Assignment 3

Do not wait until the last minute to start the assignment! It’s best to get an early start and work on it in several steps. Do not hesitate to ask for help before the assignment is due! BB’s office hours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30-11:30 and 12:45-1:30 in Science 130/132 or by arrangement. Dustin’s office hours are on Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30-1:00 in Science 130/132. • Assignments must be either typed or hand-written neatly; in the latter case, it is safest to work in pencil. You may use a word processor and write equations and calculations by hand.
• Assignments must be on clean sheets of paper (lined paper is often easier), not torn from a notebook.
• Assignments must include all steps that lead to the final answer. Solutions that require discussion must be written in complete sentences with perfect spelling and grammar.

1. We will finish Units 2A and 2B of the book and then move on to Chapter 3. Please read the important Unit 3A.

3. Please do the following exercises. You must show the use of units clearly!! This is a minimum recommended dose of exercises. Don’t hesitate to work more exercises if you have not mastered the concepts.

Unit 2A: 15d, 26

Unit 2B: 4d, 8b, 49a,b

Unit 3A: 6c, 8, 12

4. Extra Credit: Suppose you buy a (British) pint of beer in a pub and pay £1.75 (1.75 British pounds). Two weeks later, you are back in America and buy a 12-ounce glass of beer for $2.50. Which beer was more expensive? (You will need to read Unit 2B carefully).

Just For Fun:

Suppose you have two cups in front of you: One holds coffee and one holds milk. You take a teaspoon of milk from the milk cup and stir it into the coffee cup. Next, you take a teaspoon of the mixture in the coffee cup and put it back into the milk cup. After the two transfers, which of the following is true?

• there is more coffee in the milk cup than milk in the coffee cup;
• there is less coffee in the milk cup than milk in the coffee cup; or
• the amount of coffee in the milk cup equals the amount of milk in the coffee cup.
