early start and work on it in several steps. Do not hesitate to ask for help
before the assignment is due! Office hours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays
immediately before and after class in Science 132 or by arrangement. Email also

A. We will start a major topic in the course: probability! Please read Unit 8A. We will cover most of the chapter, so you can look ahead into Units 8B and 8C.
B. Please do the following problems from the book. Remember to show your work, state all assumptions, and please write clearly!
Unit 8A: 8, 10c, 14d, 16c, 18, 28.

In one room there are three switches each
connected to exactly one of three electric lamps in an adjoining room. What is
the fewest number of trips between rooms needed to determine which switch is
connected to which lamp?
