Math 2000 - Assignment 3

Spring 2001

Due February 8

Do not wait until the last minute to start the assignment! It’s best to get an early start and work on it in several steps. Do not hesitate to ask for help before the assignment is due! Office hours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays immediately before and after class in Science 132 or by arrangement. Email also works at wbriggs@math.cudenver.edu.

A. Please read Units 3A and 3B of the book. As you read, I encourage you to pause and answer the Time-Out to Think questions. I will also leave it to you to at least contemplate the Review Questions at the end of the units. You do not need to memorize conversion factors, but you should be able to find them quickly in the book.

B. Please do the following problems from the book. Remember to show your work and always use units!

Unit 3A: 16b, 18c, 20c, 20e

Unit 3B: 4e, 8c, 13d, 15d.

C. Shower vs. Bath: Do you use more water taking a shower or a bath?

a. First do a little research to determine how many gallons of water are in a cubic foot.

b. Suppose you use a bathtub that looks like a box 5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep and you fill it half-full with water. How much water do you use?

c. Suppose you use a shower with a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute and you take a 12-minute shower. How much water do you use?

d. How long would you have to shower (in minutes) before you use the amount of water used in your bath?

e. Suppose you have a bathtub that also has a shower. Without doing any math, how can you determine whether a shower or a bath requires more water?

Just For Fun:

Suppose you have two cups in front of you: One holds coffee and one holds milk. You take a teaspoon of milk from the milk cup and stir it into the coffee cup. Next, you take a teaspoon of the mixture in the coffee cup and put it back into the milk cup. After the two transfers, which of the following is true?
