We will spend just a few days talking about the important subject of exponential growth. So please read Unit 7A.

Here is the assignment for this week. Discuss and give an answer to the question:

Which is safer, travel by commercial airlines or travel by private automobile?

This is an open-ended question that could be interpreted in various ways. It is important to state clearly the quantities that you choose to use for comparison. Use any sources you can find to support your conclusions. You must use several years of current U.S. data. Cite all references that you use. Include all arguments and reasoning that lead to your conclusion. Solutions should be 2-3 pages long, not including tables and graphs. You may work alone or in pairs.


Just For Fun

Jill and Jack ran a 100-meter race. When Jill crossed the finish line Jack had run only 95 meters. They decided to race again and Jill handicapped herself by starting 5 meters behind the starting line. If they both run at the same constant speed as they did in the first race, who wins the second race? (The solution requires no calculation.)
