not wait until the last minute to start the assignment! It’s best to get an
early start and work on it in several steps. Do not hesitate to ask for help
before the assignment is due! Office hours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays
immediately before and after class in Science 132 or by arrangement. Email also
works at wbriggs@math.cudenver.edu.
A. Please read Units 3A and 3B of the book. We will not cover Unit 3C, but if you are interested in problem solving strategies, it may interest you. As you read, I encourage you to pause and answer the Time-Out to Think questions. I will also leave it to you to at least contemplate the Review Questions at the end of the units. You do not need to memorize conversion factors, but you should be able to find them quickly in the book.
B. What kind of statistical study would be used to answer the following questions? Your answer may be brief, but you must explain your reasoning.
1. What is the average income of public school teachers?
2. Can listening to jazz music while studying improve students’ grades?
3. Do bicycle helmets result in a significant reduction in head injuries?
4. Does playing soccer help swimmers improve their times?
5. Does an aspirin a day reduce the incidence of heart attacks?
C. Please do the following problems from the book. Remember to show your work and always use units!
Unit 3A: 8c, 16b, 18b, 20b, 20d
Unit 3B: 4f, 8a,15c.
