Text: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics, (5th Edition) by Douglas Smith, Maurice Eggen,
and Richard St. Andre

Course Content: Chapters 1-4, and portions of chapters 5, 6, and 7.

Prerequisites:  Math 1401

Grading Policy:
Tests:  There will be two exams, and a comprehensive final exam (see the tentative
schedule on next page.)
Homework Assignments:  Homework problems will be given over each section covered.
Most of them, however, will not be collected. These problems will be considered the minimum that
you are required to do in order to be successful in this course. During class select example problems
will be given in order to emphasize the material covered. The problems along with their solutions
will be posted online following each class period. Each student is expected to work these problems
whether in class if time permits, or after class, and check their answers.

Select problems will be assigned, collected, and evaluated. These will be then returned with comments
for you to correct and resubmit. This process will continue until either you do the exercise correctly,
or a specified deadline is passed. You may submit your problem up to a total of 4 times. Your grade on
these assignments will depend on the number of attempts that you require to complete the problem (Please
see grading attachment). If you never complete the problem successfully, you will receive no points for
the assignment. Upon receiving a graded homework problem, if resubmission is necessary, the resubmission
must take place prior to the beginning of class the following meeting. If this is not done, then you will
receive no points for the assignment. Homework that is not submitted prior to the final deadline given for
that particular assignment will not be accepted.

Homework that is handed in should follow the following guidelines:
 1. Please use only one side of the paper when doing assignments.
       2. Show all work neatly since messy papers may not be graded.
3. Staple your papers together. The penalty for not using a staple will be exponential.
4. Make sure you do the assigned problems since no credit will be given for the work on an
incorrect problem.
5. When resubmitting problems, you must submit copies of all previously submitted versions
along with the new version.

You are able to work together in doing homework assignments; however, copying someone's assignment
will not be tolerated.  If this occurs, all students involved will receive no credit on the assignment.
Quizzes:  Every week a short quiz will be given in class on the homework material that was
assigned. These quizzes will come directly from your homework assignment, and so there will be no
surprises. At the end of the semester, your lowest 2 quiz grades will be dropped.
Absences: Any absences must be discussed with me prior to missing class in order for
arrangements to be made to make up missed material. If the absence is not discussed beforehand, then
in order for provisions to be made, you will need documentation such as a doctor’s note, death
certificate, police report, etc.
              Percentage Breakdown:

                                  Exam I                     20 %

Homework Grading Attachment

Homework is graded in the following fashion:

            1st submission:

You will hand in your homework by a specified deadline (usually one week from when the problem is assigned).

For this submission, your maximum score will be 100 out of 100.

No score will be given under a 90 if this submission is accepted.

            2nd submission:

If your first attempt was not acceptable, you must try again. You will resubmit the problem with your first submission attached

by the next class period after receiving your graded first submission.

For this submission, your maximum score will be 90 out of 100.

No score will be given under an 80 if this submission is accepted.

            3rd submission:

Rules are the same as for second submission except

For this submission, your maximum score will be 80 out of 100.

No score will be given under a 70 if this submission is accepted.

            4th submission:

Rules are the same as for the other resubmissions except

For this submission, your maximum score will be 70 out of 100.

No score will be given under a 60 if this submission is accepted.

If the 4th submission is not accepted, you will receive no points on the assignment.

Also, for each assignment there will be a final due date that your final submission must be turned in by to receive credit for the assignment.
