I first started dating my wife Linda when we were in high school in Springfield, Mass., and we got married shortly after I graduated from college. Our two kids, Scott and Kim, are now adults. When they were young they were competitive figure skaters. In the summers we would frequently go on long camping trips, usually to the beach or the mountains. It was then that we fell in love with Colorado and hoped that someday we would be able to live here. Fortunately, in 1981, our opportunity came, and it was great for the entire family. Scott and Kim along with Linda were able to skate year round, and we all became avid skiers, first X-country, and then downhill, and also, for me, I could also golf most of the year. For Linda it was also a great opportunity professionally, first teaching high school biology, and then getting a chance to write a high school biology textbook.
Kim graduated from Swarthmore College with a major in biology, and then got a masters degree in microbiology from Jefferson University. She followed that with 4 years of medical school, and then 3 years of residency in internal medicine, all at Jefferson, which she completed in June of 2004. In July of 2004 she started a 3 year cardiology fellowship at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill which she has just completed. Much to our delight she has accepted a position in the Pikes Peak Cardiology Group in Colorado Springs and has just moved there this July. Her husband Will Dulaney also graduated from Swarthmore, and in 2003 got his law degree from Temple University. He spent the year 2003-2004 clerking for a judge in Philadelphia, and then started at a law firm in Raleigh in September of 04. Now he is looking for a new position in Colorado Springs. Linda and I are so excited about their move to Colorado since we can now see their two wonderful children, Taylor, who is 3, and Addison, who is 7 months, every week. Taylor has already shown a passion for sports, and we look forward to enjoying golfing, skiing, and hiking with them as they grow older.
Scott graduated from Williams College with a double major in math and physics, and then with a Ph.D. in astronomy from Cornell University. He now works in the astronautics group at Lockheed-Martin in Jefferson County. His wife Georgia also graduated from Williams and has a law degree from Cornell, but spends her working time now as a computing consultant. They have two delightful kids, Erik, who is in tenth grade, and Serena, who is in ninth grade. Linda and I love having them close by and try to do something with them each week. Erik and I are regulars at various sporting events and on the ski slopes, and more recently Serena has joined us on the slopes.
Linda has spent a good part of her life teaching high school biology, but since her textbook published by Glencoe-McGraw-Hill has been so successful, her life has changed dramatically. She now works as a national science consultant for Glencoe, traveling around the country doing workshops for teachers on all of Glencoe's secondary science books. Every two or three years she has to work on a major revision of her book also, so she is constantly busy, but it has been a great new career for her. Together we like bike riding, hiking and skiing. We travel a lot, frequently to somewhere where there is a beach. Our favorite places are Ogunquit, Maine, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Kauai. For years we have talked about having a place in the mountains, so finally 6 years ago we bought a condo in Frisco on the shores of Lake Dillon. We spend lots of weekends there all year, skiing in the winter and hiking and biking and boating in the summer and fall.
My passion has always been sports. Growing up my hero was Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, and I wanted to play for them when I grew up. However, I was a little kid with much more talent in math than baseball, so here I am. In my teens my interest changed to basketball, and I had finally grown enough by the time I went to college to be able to play basketball there. I've played all my life until a serious knee injury in an over 50 league a few years ago ended basketball. Actually, I could keep playing, but I love golf too much to risk more basketball injuries. I wish that I had started golf at a younger age, but since starting when I was 20 I have continued to work at improving so that now I am playing the best golf of my life. I frequently play in weekend golf tournaments at a couple of golf clubs as well as some state senior tournaments. I have won the senior club championship at Fox Hollow 3 times in the past 9 years. To me, one of the things that is special about Colorado is that many weekends during the winter you can golf one day and ski the other.
I consider myself fortunate that my personal life and professional life complement each other so well. I work hard and I love my job, but I also play hard and enjoy spending time with my family. To me thats a wonderful combination.
