Textbook: Fred L. Ramsey and Daniel W. Schafer, The Statistical Sleuth: A Course in Methods of Data Analysis, 2nd Ed., Duxbury, 2002.

Prerequisites: An introductory course in statistics such as MATH 2830 or permission of instructor.
Students who have some exposure to statistical thinking and methodologies and that have a good level of mathematical understanding are qualified for the course.

Grading:

• Homework: 40%
  Homework assignments will be given weekly. Collaboration is strongly encouraged! Randomly chosen problems will be graded.
  Late homework will not be accepted. You may drop your lowest percentage score.
  Most assignments will involve computing using the statistical package R and tutorials will be available.

• Midterm Exam: 20%
  The midterm exam will be in-class, given on March 16.

• Final Exam: 30%
  The final exam will be comprehensive and in-class, during Final Exam Week scheduled time.

• (4830: 10% free) OR (5830) Journal Article Assignment: 10%
  The project will be due at the end of the semester and will consist of a brief report and a brief presentation to the class.

The aim of this course is to teach the basic statistical methodologies for summarizing and analyzing data and making inferences. The focus will be on those methodologies that will give practical tools to students who wish to do research in Social, Biological and Physical sciences. We will review basic methodologies and cover alternate analyses for cases when the usual assumptions fail.

• Review of estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing
• ANOVA
• Simple linear regression
• Multiple regression

Incomplete grades:

Incomplete grades (IW or IF) are NOT granted for low academic performance. To be eligible for an incomplete grade, students MUST:

(1) successfully complete a minimum of 75% of the course,

(2) have special circumstances beyond their control that preclude them from attending class and completing graded assignments, and

(3) make arrangements to complete missing assignments with the original instructor via completion of a CLAS Course Completion Agreement. Verification of special circumstances is required. The CLAS Course Completion Agreement is available from the CLAS Advising Office, NC 2024 or from the Department of Mathematics.

• January 12, 2006 (5:00 p.m. ) Payment plan deadline for students registering by December 16, 2005. Students who have not applied for financial aid are administratively disenrolled for non-payment on January 13, 2006.
• January 19, 2006 (midnight) Last day to be added to the wait-list for a closed course.
• January 17 - January 27, 2006 Students are responsible for verifying an accurate Spring 2006 registration via SMART.
• February 1, 2006 (midnight) Last day to add courses via the web SMART system.
• February 1, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day to add 16-week structured courses without a written petition for a late add. This deadline does not apply to independent study, internships, and late-starting modular classes.
• February 1, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day to drop a Spring 2006 course for tuition refund and no transcript notation.
• February 1, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day for undergraduates and graduates to apply for May 2006 graduation.
• February 10, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day for CLAS students to add a Spring 2006 course. Treated as an absolute deadline.
• April 3, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day to drop a Spring 2006 course without college approval.
• April 14, 2006 (5:00 p.m.) Last day for CLAS students to drop a Spring 2006 course. Treated as an absolute deadline.
