Details on Downloading a Tool

After you login to math, enter cd public_html to be in your home web site. I suggest making a subdirectory, called courses. When you want to have one of the tools, you are instructed to download a file.

Click on it with your left mouse button while holding down the shift key.

Alternatively, if you click with your right mouse button, you will see a menu (from Netscape); choose Save Link As.... In either case, you will see a choice of where you want to save it. Choose the subdirectory for the course(s) that you just made (or just the public_html directory if you decided to keep everything there). If you entered Netscape from this subdirectory, it will be what shows on the menu, so you can just click the OK button.

In some cases, the file ends in .tar, in which case you have another step, as follows. You are now in your directory with the .tar file, and you were instructed to use tar xvf ... to obtain the files you need. Once you do this, change the permissions by entering chmod a+rwx *.* (if you are in your home site, you might replace *.* with selected files).

That completes the download, and you are ready to edit the files, as instructed, as the last step to being ready to use the tool. If this is not clear, please contact the W4T Director for clarification. You can also look here for additional information.
