Credit by Examination

Policy on Credit by Examination:

A student may obtain credit for certain courses at the discretion of the instructor and the department chairperson by passing comprehensive examinations only during a term in which the student is regularly enrolled as a degree student. The student must pay the appropriate resident or nonresident tuition rates equivalent to the minimum tuition charge for credit hours for each course challenged. An additional examination fee will be assessed for each examination taken, regardless of the number of hours or credits that could be earned. This payment must be in advance of taking the examination. The procedure a student follows to obtain comprehensive examination credit must include each of the following steps:

  1. Obtain an application for "Credit By Examination" at the office of Records and Registration.
  2. Complete the required information on the application and take the application to the math department for instructor and chairperson's signature of approval, then to the dean of the school or college in which the student is enrolled for the dean's signature of approval.
  3. Note the following:
    1. For courses in which the department gives a uniform final, the instructor is the Chairperson of the Undergraduate Committee and the exam is the uniform final given that semester. It must be taken at the same time the uniform final is scheduled that semester.
    2. For courses in which the department does not give a uniform final (including all courses during the summer semester), it is the student's responsibility to find a rostered faculty member who is willing to make up and grade the examination.
  4. Take the completed form to the Bursar's Office to pay the tuition, then back to the instructor who keeps the form. NO refund will be made and the exam can be taken only once for each completion of the process.
  5. If the exam is completed with a grade of C- or better, the instructor will mark the form appropriately and return the white portion to the Records and Registration Office where the appropriate credits will be assigned. The yellow portion is to be kept in the department with a copy of the exam and the pink portion is returned to the student.
  6. Courses will be listed under Credit by Examination on the transcript by course number, course title, and number of hours received. No grade will be recorded.
