The parents of Lynn Bateman donated the funds that support these two awards. They did so to honor their daughter, Lynn, who was an excellent teacher for the Department of Mathematics, 1985 - 1988. We remember Lynn for her dedication to the teaching of mathematics and her commitment to our department. Lynn Bateman Memorial Teaching Award For those individuals who demonstrate the intelligence and determination that Lynn brought to her work, this annual award is given to a graduate student who has excelled in teaching, has contributed to department service, and has gone beyond the basic requirements of a teaching assistantship. Award Criteria The Lynn Bateman Teaching Award is based upon the following criteria:
The same person cannot receive this award two years in a row. Award Recipients 1989 Theresa Henson. Teri currently teaches at Las Positas College in Livermore, California.1990 Van Emden Henson. Van taught at the Naval Postgraduate School for five years, before taking a position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He is currently Group Leader of the Scalable Algorithms Group. 1991 Monica Stoupa (formerly Fleischauer). Monica taught in the Mathematics Department at Community College of Denver, where she served as department chair for several years. She is now teaching at Brighton High School 1992 Rick Reeves. Rick teaches at Red Rocks Community College in Denver, where he has served as department chair. 1992 Terry Chen. Terry is on the faculty of the Mathematics Department at Red Rocks Community College in Denver. 1993 William Burkland. Bill works at Robert Peccia and Associates, a civil engineering firm in Helena, Montana. 1994 Patricia McKenna. After receiving her Ph.D., Patty spent two years on a post-doctoral fellowship in Aukland, New Zealand. She is now on the faculty of the Mathematics Department at Metropolitan State College in Denver. 1995 Michael Kawai. Mike taught at Western Piedmont Community College in Morgantown, North Carolina, before returning to the University of Colorado Denver in 2001 as a senior instructor in the Mathematics Department. 1996 Allen G. Holder. Al held a visiting position at the University of Mississippi and is now an associate professor at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. 1997 Faun Doherty. Faun accepted a visiting position at Dartmouth College after receiving her Ph.D. She is now an adjunct faculty member in the Mathematics Department at the University of Colorado Denver. 1998 Leanne D. Holder. Leanne held a visiting position at the University of Mississippi and now has a faculty position at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. 1999 Markus Emsermann. Marcus currently works for Jeppesen-Sanderson, a large aviation consulting firm in Denver. 2000 Daluss Siewert. Daluss is a faculty member in the Mathematics Department at South Dakota State University. 2001 Frank Duca. Frank currently teaches at Santa Monica Community College in California. 2002 Dave Brown. Dave completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver and is a professor at Utah State University. 2003 Mark Werner. Mark completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver in May 2003 and teaches at The American University in Cairo. 2004 Carey Jenkins. Carey is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Denver. 2005 Rob Rostermundt (co-winner with Gary Olson). Rob completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver in December 2005. 2005 Gary Olson (co-winner with Rob Rostermundt). Gary completed his M.S. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver in May 2005, and he is an instructor in the Department of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences. 2006 Cathy Jorgensen. Cathy completed her M.S. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver in December 2007. 2007 Ryan Pedersen. Ryan is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Denver. Lynn Bateman Memorial Fellowship Established in 1998, this fellowship is awarded to an outstanding graduate teacher assistant to support doctoral research. The criteria for the fellowship are as follows:
Fellowship Recipients 1998 Mark A. Miller. Mark is on the faculty of the Mathematics Department at Marietta College , in Marietta, Ohio.1999 Not awarded. 2000 Faun Doherty. Faun accepted a visiting position at Dartmouth after receiving her Ph.D. She is now an adjunct faculty member in the Mathematics Department at the University of Colorado Denver. 2001 Dave Brown. Dave completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver and teaches at Utah State University. 2002 Rob Rostermundt. Rob completed his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver in 2005. 2003 Tessa Weinstein. Tessa completed her Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver and is an assistant professor at Coastal Carolina University. 2004 Jeff Matsuo. Jeff is completing his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver. 2005 Steve Flink. Steve is completing his Ph.D. in applied mathematics at CU-Denver. 2006 Ryan Pederson. Ryan is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Denver. 2007 Shelley Speiss (co-winner with Timothy Vis). Shelley is completing her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Denver. 2007 Timothy Vis (co-winner with Shelley Speiss). Tim is completing his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado Denver.
