The Mathematics Clinic

Fall 2008 Math Clinic: Pattern Analysis in Medical Imaging

Pattern analysis in medical images has begun to flourish over the past couple of decades due to increased computing power, advances in pattern recognition algorithms and the ascendancy of digital images in medical diagnosis. The mathematics community has and should play a leading role in the future of medical image analysis. The goal of the Fall 2008 Math Clinic is to approach specific issues in medical image pattern analysis using artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and fuzzy mathematics (FM) techniques.

The Clinic instructors will conduct lectures throughout the semester covering ANNs, SVMs and FMs and guidance in literature searches will be provided. The students are expected to participate in projects that will arise from our study and thus are expected to take leadership and initiative in embracing the projects. For example, one project may be to find a mechanism for distinguishing diseased from healthy liver tissue in computed tomography images. Another project may be lesion detection in magnetic resonance images of the brain. Each student will be assigned a team and a project, for example, one of the above projects. The type of project that will be worked on will depend on the composition of talent of students signing up for the clinic.

This clinic is being sponsored by a grant from the Department of Radiation Oncology at University of Colorado Denver, hence a necessary and sufficient quantity of medical images will be available.
