CCM Facilities
for External Funding Proposals
Here are items for
proposals that want to include the CCM network (also known as the Math network)
in the available facilities. These items go into the Facilities, Budget, and Budget
Justificiation sections.
Computer Facilities
The investigators use the network of the Center for Computational Mathematics
at the University of Colorado at Denver, which includes
- a Beowulf cluster with 72CPUs, 72GB memory, and 2TB total disk capacity
- a machine room with independent air-conditioning
- numerous Linux servers with single and dual CPUs
- Compaq AlphaServer DS20 with 2 CPUS and 4GB memory
- SGI Power Challenge L with 4 CPUs
- Linux and Windows workstations and X-terminals in public areas and every
office
- multiple laser printers, including high-speed color printers
- gigabit optical fiber backbone
- wireless network for laptops
- scientific and software development software, including Matlab, Femlab,
Mathematica,
Maple, PGI cluster compilers, and TotalView debugger
The Center for Computational Mathematics has a professional full time system
administrator.
(Mention particular equipment or software on the network as appropriate.)
Budget
Please add a budget item for Computer Services, and,
when the budget is revised, make sure that it stays
at the same percentage of the total budget.
For the standard 42% indirect cost rate, the algorithm below results in
0.05/(1+0.05*1.42) = approx 4.67% of the total budget. This is what Sponsored
Programs use.
A similar computer charge is common at many institutions. This budget item
is routinely accepted by grant agencies.
Additional hardware or software to be purchased for the proposed project and its
maintenance for the duration of the project should
be budgeted separately.
This requirement was approved by a vote of the Faculty of the Department of Mathematics on May 14, 2003.
This budget item does not apply to grants where such expense is not allowed by the grant program
rules.
Budget Justification
Funds are requested for the services of the Center for Computational Mathematics
at the University of Colorado at Denver, at the rate of 5% of the total budget
before the fee is added. These funds are used toward the expenses of operating
the equipment on the Center network directly used in this research, in particular for
general use server and cluster hardware and software,
and for system administration. This budget item is required in all proposals from the
Department of Mathematics that use the computing facilities, unless disallowed by the grant agency.
