DISCONTINUOUS FINITE ELEMENTS FOR DIFFUSION PROBLEMS Alessandro Russo, Istituto di Analisi Numerica del CNR, Pavia, Italy We analyze a method recently appeared in the engineering literature consisting of a rather peculiar (but quite effective) way of using discontinuous finite elements for diffusive terms. The aim of our work is to provide a solid mathematical background for this approach, and to trace properly its limits and its capabilities.
