ABSTRACT

The talk will first discuss a new finite element approach based on the
partition of unity. This method is a generalization of the classical FEM
which allows flexibly to use polynomial and nonpolynomial shape functions
without changing the implementational frame of the method. The classical
h, p and hp FE method is a special case.

Then the talk will address the problem of a-posteriori error estimation
and its reliability, theoretical and practical aspects.

The talk will present numerical results and conclusions for use in
practice.
