Title:

The NCVS Voice Dosimeter: A Tool Used to Record and Quantify Long-term Voice Use.

Abstract:

This presentation will discuss the creation of a device which could unobtrusively collect voice data over extended periods of time. The technical issues - including transducer selection, dynamic range, frequency response, memory requirements, power requirements, attachment, cables, connections, data collection and analysis of the data set - will be discussed. This discussion will be in the perspective of the research question: How do occupational voice users (e.g., teachers, telephone workers, ministers, counselors, interviewers) use their voice and in what circumstances are they at risk for vocal injury from prolonged speaking? For this study, 60 Denver area school teachers have used this device for 160 hours on average (several million data points each) for more than 7000 hours in two-week increments.
