Prerequisites: Math 3210(Higher Geometry I)
A comment on prerequisites: While not required, the following courses will be useful. We will use Linear Algebra heavily, so Math 3191 (or a more advanced Linear Algebra course) is a good prerequisite. I will emphasize the finite aspects of the subject, so a background in Combinatorics will be useful (say, Math 4409 Applied Combinatorics), but not essential, as we will not be using any of the real heavy-duty combinatorial techniques. There is a bit of algebra (in particular, groups and fields) involved in the course, so Math 3140 Intro to Modern Algebra will be handy. Any of these topics will be reviewed as necessary.
Exams: There will be two in-class exams (see schedule below) a midterm and a final. Biweekly homework collections will also be graded.
Homework: Homework will be assigned weekly. Specific problems will be collected and graded on alternate weeks.
Grades: The final grade will be determined as follows:
There's no curving of exam grades : A(100-90) B(89-80) C(79-70) D(69-60) F(<60)
Pluses and minuses may be used in final grades at my discretion.
